Tech bae πŸ€” as most people will call it πŸ˜‚, is a lady that is passionate and works in the technology industry, building solutions to users' problems to make life easy for them in their day-to-day activities. Yes, I am one and you can call me a Tech Bae 😌.

This is my first write-up about myself after so much procrastination. Yippe πŸŽ‰, I overcame that and here I am πŸ˜‚. Before I go on, let me introduce myself πŸ€—. My name is Owolabi Gbemisola Oluwatoyin most people call me Gbemiglad 😌. I am from Nigeria and I hail from Ikirun in Osun state. I am from a family of 6, my parent, with 4 girls and I am the number 3. Now that you a little about me.

Let me tell you a story and align you on how I became a tech bae πŸ™‚. When I was little, I learnt a lot from my daddy and as we are all girl's family. Most times when my dad travels, I get to do most of the little technical work in the house which I have learnt over time from him, though they might be little then but it was a big thing for me.

I won’t say I had a passion for engineering but I was always curious about how things are built and most times I do trial and error at home. I remembered a time we had a little issue with our TV station, of course, I was the one they called to fix little things like that if it is not too technical right? So that day, I was called to adjust the antenna at home, I went to adjust it and it was fun as I get a response that it is working at first after some seconds, it is not working again πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚. It was later frustrating because you are trying to get a particular station. You want it to be stable right, but most time when it is about to be stable everything crash and you start all over again (trial and error) till you get it and there is always that joy that comes with me getting the station working back for everyone to watch and listen to. The happiest thing then is I get to be called an engineer anytime I fix something at home πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.

Also, I always put on the generator at home that was my duty if my daddy is not at home. My sibling push anything that deals with electricity or technical work to me (Of course they are not really technical like that and I am always careful ), well I am still wondering where I got that energy back then because I was always ready to solve the problem (run that kind of errand abeg πŸ˜‚). This might seem like a little thing to you but seriously it was one of my fun moments when I was a kid that everyone said I had to do an engineering course at the university (I was also feeling myself πŸ˜…).

There was another time when we parked to our permanent site, I was the one that assembled everything that deals with the TV, antenna, generator, connecting the DVD to the TV (ofcourse with the help of my daddy) etc. I was around age 13 then, I remembered my grandma complaining that β€œI am too little to be touching wires that I can be electrocuted and I can spoil things there”. My dad responded that β€œshe is the one that can do it, let her do it and learn” and if I am stuck I should call him. I was happy because my dad always support me right, like he won’t say you are a girl go and sit down. He supported me in everything. From there I became curious about a lot of things (lest I forget, I was beaten one day for my curiosity like I chop cane because I won't let any phone my hand touch to rest. That was when I was in primary school. Okay back to the story).

I decided I was going to go for the technology industry. I was in a science class in my secondary school and I learnt a lot (well science stuff). I will say I loved mathematics that I won the award for best student in mathematics for the junior category in my JSS 3. I went to command secondary school Ibadan (CSSI) and it was a boarding school (Always far from home). You can call me a β€œCommando”, I was also able to be in a leadership position as the house captain of the purple house 2012/2013 set. My hostel collected the neatness hostel for the year, it is not easy. This is just me celebrating those little wins back then πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.

After secondary school, I waited a year at home to gain admission because I didn’t meet up with my course target which I don’t just want to go for any course given to me. So, I did a self-study alongside helping my parent in their business in that one year. I scored 220 in jamb this was 2015, I did my post-utme and I was given admission into the university of Agriculture, Abeokuta to study computer science.

This is where the story begins, alongside studying computer science in school, I did a lot of self-upskilling which wasn’t easy at all. I did a lot of trial and error to find my niche in tech. In my next write-up, I will be discussing the trial and error, my failures, imposter syndrome and how I was able to find a certain niche in tech.
